As a small child back in the early 1970s I remember sitting in the middle of the living room watching my mother and her friends examining brightly coloured plastic boxes, plates and bowls. If you’ve never come across party plans before, they are a form of direct selling by hosting a social event to display and demonstrate products with the aim of selling to those gathered. The host receives a commission on all sales. The party plan has been used primarily to sell items such as Tupperware itself, skincare, cosmetics (think Avon), lingerie (Ann Summers) and jewellery.
