Before I get into trouble for inciting violence
against the postal union, consider this . . .
A global study by analysts comScore this week
revealed that Google was by far the most popular
search engine with 37 billion searches in August
2007 out of a total 61 billion.
Well, no big surprise there!
The next nearest was Yahoo with 8.7 billion,
less than a quarter of Google's share.
Now a lot of Google fans will be delighted with
this news - especially those who rely on google
adwords and adsense. It cements google as THE
place to target traffic.
Make sure you check out the article in the
October WRMM issue that reveals the impact
on major changes at Google that will kick in
next year - from a Pay Per Click (PPC) to a Pay
Per Action (PPA) basis - this will make some
people a lot of money . . . but will also throw
the whole affiliate marketing as a business
opportunity industry into disarray. Thankfully
I've found someone who has already figured out
how to get around this problem and profit!
But it's not Google's virtual monopoly that
interests me the most. Look down the top 10 list
of search engines and you notice something
VERY interesting. In 6th place with 1.3 billion
searches was . . . . eBay!
This is incredibly significant when you realise
that eBay is not a general search engine at all -
but a specific search tool for a commercial
online auction market!
Whereas a large proportion of Google's
searches will be non-commercial (I've seen
figures of up to 90%), you can be pretty sure
that 100% of the searches on eBay are either
from a prospective buyer or prospective seller -
people who are highly qualified and seeking a
commercial transaction.
Come on, it's the weekend - why not trawl
through your home, select all the stuff you
don't need and list some of it on eBay? The
average home has £3,000 worth of unwanted
items that could be sold on eBay . . .

Earlier this week I alerted you to the unique

The post. In their wisdom, the postal unions
continue to disrupt MY business, the British
economy and the delivery of YOUR newsletter.
Yes, our local sorting office couldn't be
bothered to pick up the issue on Thursday and
so that means you will not get your issue until
Monday . . . at the earliest!
What makes me mad is that the workers are
killing their own future. The strikes have
already cost the post office more than £260
million - money that could - at some stage -
gone to giving the 'workers' better pay, job
security and conditions.
But I really don't have any sympathy for them.
For every day this dispute continues business
owners like me will be getting increasingly
frustrated and will look for alternative suppliers.
By my reckoning, they have cost my business at
least £25,000 in the past 7 days on my mailings.
I'm lucky that my business is established and
has a decent cash flow to take the hit, but I pity
those who may be just starting up and doing
direct mail.
I am actively looking for alternatives to The
Royal Mail. And I'm sure that if enough
businesses do the same, then you can be sure
there will be a lot more postal workers looking
for new jobs!
